About

Michael Achtelik is a pioneering roboticist whose work has fundamentally shaped the field of autonomous micro aerial vehicles (MAVs). His research centers on vision-based control, system design, and swarm intelligence for flying robots operating in GPS-denied environments. Achtelik’s major contributions include developing one of the first energy-efficient quadrotor platforms controlled at 1 kHz, dramatically improving stability and maneuverability for indoor navigation. His seminal 2014 paper on vision-controlled micro flying robots, with 297 citations, established a blueprint for autonomous mapping and navigation in confined spaces. He also advanced monocular vision for long-term state estimation, a compendium work cited 239 times that remains essential for MAV localization. Notably, Achtelik led the design of a quadcopter that broke the MAV endurance record using laser power beaming, showcasing his ability to push hardware boundaries. As a key contributor to the EU-funded SFly project, he helped pioneer swarm autonomy for cooperative mapping and surveillance. His leadership in the EuRoC challenge initiative further underscores his impact on bridging robotics research with industrial application. With over 900 citations across his most influential works, Achtelik stands as a visionary in making small, agile flying robots reliable and intelligent for real-world missions.
