The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation technology that provides real-time position, velocity, and timing information to receivers anywhere on Earth. Originally developed for military applications, GPS works by triangulating signals from a constellation of orbiting satellites to estimate a receiver's location with varying degrees of accuracy, typically within a few meters for standard receivers and centimeter-level precision with augmented techniques. In robotics and AI, GPS is a foundational component for outdoor localization and navigation, enabling autonomous vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and mobile robots to determine their absolute position in the world. It is frequently fused with complementary sensors — such as IMUs, LiDAR, and cameras — through techniques like sensor fusion and Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) to improve robustness and handle GPS-denied environments like tunnels or dense urban canyons. GPS matters because it provides a globally referenced coordinate framework that anchors robot navigation to real-world geography, enabling long-range autonomy, multi-robot coordination, and large-scale mapping. Understanding its capabilities and limitations is essential for designing reliable, safe autonomous systems.
