About
A robot is an autonomous or semi-autonomous machine capable of sensing its environment, processing information, and executing physical actions to accomplish tasks. In robotics and AI, robots integrate mechanical systems with computational intelligence — combining perception (cameras, LiDAR, IMUs), planning (motion planning, SLAM, path optimization), and control (dynamics, layered architectures) to operate effectively in real-world settings. Modern robots range from industrial manipulators and mobile ground vehicles to soft robots and autonomous cars, leveraging techniques such as probabilistic reasoning, deep reinforcement learning, visual-inertial odometry, and swarm intelligence to handle uncertainty and complexity. Foundational tools like ROS, point cloud processing libraries, and standardized benchmarks such as KITTI have accelerated development by providing shared infrastructure and evaluation frameworks. Robots matter because they extend human capability into environments that are dangerous, repetitive, or inaccessible — enabling advances in manufacturing, healthcare, exploration, and transportation — making the robust integration of sensing, intelligence, and actuation one of the central engineering challenges of our time.
