About
Travis Craig is a leading researcher in humanoid robotics and assistive exoskeletons, whose work has significantly advanced the fields of disaster response robotics and personal mobility. As a key member of Team IHMC, Craig played a pivotal role in the DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC), where the team achieved first or second place overall in all three phases. His retrospective analysis of the DRC, published in 2016 (51 citations), provides crucial insights into rapid research and development under extreme constraints, earning recognition as a foundational reference in the field. Craig also contributed to the development of the Yobotics-IHMC lower body humanoid robot (2009, 21 citations), a twelve-degree-of-freedom platform using series elastic actuators and virtual model control for dynamic locomotion. More recently, he has focused on user-centered exoskeleton design, as demonstrated by Team IHMC’s participation in the 2020 Cybathlon (7 citations), where they developed personal mobility exoskeletons for individuals with gait pathologies. His work bridges cutting-edge control algorithms with real-world applications, from rubble-strewn disaster sites to everyday mobility assistance, making him a pivotal figure in both robotics and rehabilitation engineering.
