About

Brandon Shrewsbury is a robotics researcher whose work spans humanoid robot control, disaster response automation, teleoperation, and assistive exoskeleton technology. He is perhaps best known for his pivotal contributions to Team IHMC's participation in the DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC), a landmark competition aimed at developing robots capable of responding to natural and man-made disasters. His 2015 retrospective on the DRC Trials has accumulated over 240 citations, reflecting its significance as a foundational resource for the humanoid robotics community, while a follow-up analysis of the full DRC — in which Team IHMC placed first or second in all three phases — added further insight into rapid research and development under extreme conditions. Beyond disaster robotics, Shrewsbury has contributed to balance and push-recovery control for humanoid platforms, high-speed teleoperation systems, and user-centered exoskeleton design, as demonstrated by Team IHMC's participation in the 2020 Cybathlon. His earlier work also explored robot-assisted nuclear forensics and educational robotics using the LEGO NXT platform, showcasing a breadth of application across his career. With research touching human-machine cognition, real-world robot deployment, and assistive mobility, Shrewsbury represents a versatile and practically minded voice in modern robotics research.
