About

Yunzhou Zhang is a robotics and autonomous systems researcher whose work spans indoor localization, semantic mapping, and robot perception. His early contributions focused on solving the practical challenges of robot positioning in indoor environments, with his 2011 hybrid RSSI/TDOA localization method garnering 133 citations and establishing him as a key voice in wireless sensor network-based navigation. This foundational work evolved into increasingly sophisticated approaches, including grid-based maximum likelihood estimation for dynamic localization and three-dimensional camera-assisted positioning in multimedia sensor networks. Zhang's most distinctive contributions lie in Object SLAM — the fusion of object-level semantic understanding with simultaneous localization and mapping. His series of papers on quadric landmark representation, joint data association, and semantic mapping (2021–2023) have collectively attracted over 100 citations, pushing the boundaries of how robots perceive and interact with structured environments indoors and in autonomous driving scenarios. Complementing this, his research extends into deep reinforcement learning for person-following robots, vision-based trajectory prediction for manipulation, and few-shot semantic segmentation for robotic grasping. His 2018 work on microservice-based cloud robotics further demonstrates a systems-level vision for intelligent robotic infrastructure. With over 360 total citations across a decade of research, Zhang represents a versatile and impactful force in intelligent robotics.
