About

Myron Diftler is a pioneering robotics engineer whose career has centered on developing humanoid and dexterous robotic systems for space exploration, primarily through NASA's Johnson Space Center. He is best known as a principal architect of the Robonaut program, which produced some of the most sophisticated anthropomorphic robots ever built. His foundational work on the original Robonaut — a human-scaled robot with two arms, five-fingered hands, and a torso — established new benchmarks in dexterous manipulation and space robotics, earning nearly 400 citations. His subsequent development of the Robonaut hand, with its fourteen degrees of freedom closely mimicking astronaut dexterity, became a landmark contribution cited over 530 times. Perhaps his most celebrated achievement is Robonaut 2, co-developed with General Motors and launched to the International Space Station in 2011 as the first humanoid robot in space, accumulating over 450 citations.
