About
A robotic hand is a mechanical end-effector designed to replicate or approximate the grasping and manipulation capabilities of the human hand. These devices range from simple grippers with two or three fingers to highly anthropomorphic, multi-fingered systems with dozens of degrees of freedom, tactile sensors, and compliant structures. In robotics and AI, robotic hands are used for tasks such as object grasping, dexterous in-hand manipulation, assembly, surgery, space operations, and rehabilitation assistance. Modern designs integrate reinforcement learning to train complex manipulation policies, deep learning for grasp detection, and surface EMG or brain-computer interfaces for prosthetic control. Tactile sensing plays a growing role in enabling fine object recognition and safe interaction. Robotic hands matter because dexterous manipulation remains one of the hardest open problems in robotics—bridging it would allow robots to handle unstructured environments, assist humans in daily tasks, restore limb function for amputees, and operate safely alongside people across industrial, medical, and exploratory domains.
