About
Jairo Maldonado-Contreras is a roboticist whose work bridges two frontiers: autonomous exploration in extreme environments and intelligent control of lower-limb prostheses. On the autonomy side, he was a key contributor to Team CoSTAR’s winning entry in the DARPA Subterranean Challenge, developing the NeBula autonomy solution that enabled robots to navigate GPS-denied tunnels and urban ruins. The team’s flagship paper (105 citations) and its follow-up (51 citations) detail the algorithms and hardware that allowed these robots to operate without human intervention in some of the most challenging environments on Earth. In parallel, Maldonado-Contreras is advancing wearable robotics for individuals with limb loss. His work focuses on real-time intent recognition—using deep learning to infer a user’s desired movement (level ground, stairs, ramps) from sensor data alone. His 2024 paper on continuous-context, user-independent intent recognition (4 citations) and his 2025 work on mode-unified estimation (3 citations) move beyond traditional discrete classifiers toward fluid, natural control. He also contributed to the OpenSim model for the Open-Source Bionic Leg (6 citations), enabling standardized biomechanical analysis across research groups. His research is notable for its dual impact: pushing the boundaries of field robotics while restoring mobility through smarter prosthetics.
