About

Moju Zhao is a pioneering roboticist whose work sits at the intersection of aerial robotics, transformable systems, and robotic manipulation. Best known for developing the DRAGON robot—a dual-rotor-embedded multilink aerial platform capable of multi-degree-of-freedom transformation in SE(3)—Zhao has fundamentally expanded what autonomous flying robots can achieve. His flagship 2018 paper on DRAGON has accumulated nearly 200 citations, reflecting its landmark status in the field. A central theme throughout his research is the elegant idea of using an aerial robot's entire body as a manipulation platform, rather than relying on attached appendages, as demonstrated in his influential work on whole-body aerial manipulation with transformable multirotors. Beyond flying systems, Zhao has contributed to multi-terrain vehicles capable of operating across land, sea, and air, and to quadrupedal robots performing dexterous manipulation tasks. His investigations into aerial regrasping, shape-adaptive grasping, and fully actuated transformable platforms collectively represent a cohesive and ambitious research agenda. With over 650 cumulative citations across his top works, Zhao has established himself as a leading voice in next-generation robotic systems that blur the boundaries between locomotion and manipulation.
