Junichiro Sugihara is a pioneering roboticist whose work is reshaping the frontier of aerial robotics, with a particular focus on modular self-reconfigurable systems and autonomous mid-air assembly. His research addresses a fundamental challenge in the field: the trade-off between agile flight and robust manipulation. Sugihara’s most significant contribution is the development of TRADY, a tilted-rotor aerial robot that can autonomously assemble and disassemble other robots in mid-flight—a feat that dramatically expands the potential for collaborative, task-adaptive drone swarms.
