About

Christoforos Mavrogiannis is a robotics researcher whose work sits at the intersection of social robot navigation, human-robot interaction, and accessible robot design. He is best known for advancing how mobile robots move intelligently and graciously through human-populated environments — a problem he has examined from algorithmic, behavioral, and perceptual angles. His highly cited survey on social robot navigation (238 citations) has become a landmark reference, systematically mapping the engineering and human factors challenges that define this field. His "Social Momentum" framework, developed across multiple publications, introduced a principled approach to generating intent-expressive robot motion in crowded spaces, drawing on topological models of collective behavior and deep learning to help robots anticipate and signal their intentions to nearby pedestrians. Beyond navigation, Mavrogiannis has made meaningful contributions to affordable robotics hardware, co-developing open-source, underactuated prosthetic and research robot hands (175+ combined citations) that lower barriers to access in both research and assistive technology. His MuSHR robotic racecar platform further reflects a commitment to accessible, education-oriented robotics infrastructure. Across more than 750 total citations, his research consistently bridges rigorous technical innovation with real-world human considerations.
