Vadim Utkin is a preeminent control systems engineer whose foundational contributions to Sliding Mode Control (SMC) have shaped modern nonlinear control theory and its practical applications. Best known for his seminal textbook *Sliding Mode Control in Electro-Mechanical Systems* (2010), which has garnered over 3,200 citations, Utkin established SMC as one of the most robust and widely adopted frameworks for handling system uncertainties and disturbances in engineering applications. His 1987 work on discontinuous control systems provided an early theoretical anchor for the field, while his 2008 text further consolidated the mathematical tools underpinning SMC design.
