About
Steven Lessard is a pioneering researcher in soft robotics and rehabilitation engineering, whose work focuses on developing lightweight, compliant wearable robots to restore and augment human movement. His most significant contribution is the creation of the CRUX exosuit, a tensegrity-inspired, compliant upper-extremity exoskeleton designed for portable, multi-joint muscular augmentation. This work, along with his highly cited 2018 paper "A Soft Exosuit for Flexible Upper-Extremity Rehabilitation" (127 citations), has advanced the field of assistive robotics by prioritizing structural compliance and user comfort over traditional rigid exoskeletons. Lessard also pioneered the integration of immersive virtual reality with soft exosuits in "Project Butterfly" (30 citations), creating engaging, personalized therapy environments for stroke survivors. His research extends beyond rehabilitation to bio-inspired tensegrity manipulators and even space exploration, including a novel tensegrity heat shield design. By addressing the fundamental challenge of creating robots that move harmoniously with the human body, Lessard’s work has laid the groundwork for the next generation of wearable assistive technologies, impacting both clinical rehabilitation and human augmentation.
