An exoskeleton is a wearable robotic structure whose mechanical joints and links are aligned with the human body's skeletal segments, allowing it to physically interact with and augment the wearer's movements. In robotics and AI, exoskeletons are developed for two primary purposes: rehabilitation and physical augmentation. Rehabilitation exoskeletons—such as LOPES, ALEX, and ARMin—assist stroke survivors, spinal cord injury patients, and individuals with neuromuscular impairments by guiding or supporting limb movement during therapy, promoting neuroplasticity and functional recovery. Augmentation exoskeletons, like BLEEX, amplify a healthy user's strength and endurance for tasks such as carrying heavy loads over difficult terrain. Designs range from rigid, motorized frames to soft, cable-driven suits, and are controlled using signals from EMG sensors, brain-machine interfaces, or human-in-the-loop optimization algorithms. Exoskeletons matter because they offer scalable, repeatable, and data-driven alternatives to manual therapy, extend caregiver capacity, and open pathways toward restored mobility for millions of people with physical disabilities worldwide.
