About

Zichen Xu is pioneering the frontier of magnetic soft robotics, with a focus on creating miniature, untethered machines for medical and industrial applications. Their research spans key areas including magnetic actuation, on-demand material hardening, and minimally invasive bioprinting. Xu’s most notable contribution is the development of “spreadable” magnetic soft robots that can be deployed in complex environments and then hardened on command—a breakthrough for targeted drug delivery and surgical tools. This work has garnered 36 citations since 2023, reflecting its immediate impact. Xu also designed a magnetic-steered bioprinting system that enables in-vivo tissue fabrication through small incisions, eliminating the need for large surgical openings. Their multifunctional miniature truck robot, capable of cargo loading and unloading in the GI tract, further demonstrates practical utility. More recently, Xu has advanced reconfigurable microrobot collectives that leverage gradient magnetic fields for large force output, and a cilia-like soft gripper inspired by natural entanglement for rapid, adaptive grasping. With a growing portfolio of high-impact papers, Xu is shaping the future of soft robotics for healthcare and automation.
