Electrical engineering is the branch of engineering concerned with the study, design, and application of systems that generate, transmit, and utilize electrical energy and signals. In robotics and AI, electrical engineering underpins virtually every functional subsystem — from power electronics and motor drives that actuate movement, to sensor circuitry that enables perception of pressure, temperature, and strain. Recent advances have expanded the field's relevance into flexible and stretchable electronics, electronic skin, soft actuators, and energy-harvesting devices, enabling robots to interact safely and conformally with humans and unstructured environments. Electrical engineering principles govern the design of control architectures, signal processing circuits, transistor arrays, and wireless communication systems that allow autonomous platforms to sense, decide, and act. It matters because reliable, efficient electrical systems are the foundational infrastructure of any intelligent machine — without robust power management, actuation, and sensing circuits, advances in algorithms and mechanical design cannot be realized in physical hardware.
