About
Zhaopeng Chen is a robotics researcher whose work centers on dexterous robotic hand systems, haptic sensing, and advanced control strategies. He is perhaps best known for his contributions to the development and experimental validation of the DLR-HIT II, a sophisticated five-finger dexterous robot hand that represents a significant milestone in humanoid manipulation research. His 2010 study on impedance control for this system — garnering 44 citations — demonstrated how Cartesian impedance control, combined with joint torque feedback and nonlinearity compensation, could markedly improve the performance of elastic dexterous robot joints, offering valuable insights for compliant and safe human-robot interaction. Complementing this work, Chen also pioneered the design of a novel miniature tactile sensor for the same platform, leveraging piezoresistive mechanisms to achieve a highly integrated and compact sensing solution capable of capturing fine contact information across the hand's fingertips. Together, these contributions reflect Chen's holistic approach to robotic hand research — bridging mechanical design, sensor development, and sophisticated control — and have helped lay important groundwork for future advances in dexterous manipulation and prosthetic hand technologies.
