About
Vassilios Tsounos is a leading roboticist whose work sits at the intersection of legged locomotion, reinforcement learning, and mechanical design. He is best known for his pivotal role in developing ANYmal, a highly mobile and dynamic quadrupedal robot introduced in his highly cited 2016 paper (over 1,100 combined citations). ANYmal’s novel, compliant joint modules and torque controllability set a new standard for robustness in dynamic locomotion. Tsounos’s most influential contribution, however, is his 2019 paper “Learning agile and dynamic motor skills for legged robots,” which has garnered nearly 1,400 citations. In this work, he demonstrated that deep reinforcement learning could enable robots to master complex, animal-like maneuvers—such as jumping, running, and recovering from falls—without extensive human engineering. He has further pushed boundaries with research on cat-like jumping in low gravity using deep RL (2022, 92 citations) and on cable-driven actuation for highly dynamic systems (2018).
