S. Bachmann is a robotics researcher whose career spans two distinct but complementary domains: medical robotics and legged locomotion systems. Early in their career, Bachmann made significant contributions to robot-assisted medical ultrasound, developing a fully counter-balanced 6-DOF robotic system for diagnostic carotid artery imaging and pioneering integrated motion, force, and image-based control strategies for clinical ultrasound robots — work that attracted over 200 citations across multiple publications and helped lay the groundwork for autonomous medical imaging systems. Bachmann's most transformative impact, however, came through their involvement in the ANYmal project — a highly mobile, torque-controllable quadrupedal robot weighing 30 kg and standing 0.5 m tall. Featuring novel compliant joint modules with integrated electronics, ANYmal demonstrated remarkable robustness against impulsive loads during dynamic motion.
