Shinya Kotosaka is a robotics researcher whose work spans humanoid robotics, sensory-motor integration, multi-robot systems, and industrial automation. He is perhaps best known for his foundational contributions to humanoid robot research, most notably his involvement in the landmark 2000 study "Using Humanoid Robots to Study Human Behavior," which has accumulated 266 citations and demonstrated how robotics and human behavioral science can mutually advance one another through investigations of trajectory formation, learning from demonstration, and oculomotor control. Building on this, his 2001 work on synchronized robot drumming using neural oscillators (78 citations) offered an elegant biologically inspired approach to rhythmic motor control and sensory-motor integration. Kotosaka has also made significant contributions to multi-robot coordination, developing the LOCISS infrared sensory system to enable collision avoidance and local communication among cooperative mobile robots.
