About

Dr. Jose Benavides is a leading figure in space robotics and control systems, whose work is critical to the future of autonomous operations in microgravity. His primary research areas encompass intra-vehicular robot navigation, visual-inertial localization, and the development of interactive simulation environments for complex dynamical systems. Dr. Benavides’s most significant contribution is the creation of the first annotated benchmark datasets for free-flyer navigation, collected using the Astrobee robots aboard the International Space Station (ISS). This foundational work, detailed in his highly cited 2024 paper (9 citations), provides the essential ground truth data needed to rigorously evaluate and advance visual-inertial SLAM algorithms for zero-g spacecraft interiors. Earlier in his career, he developed the Modeling, Simulation, Animation, and Real-Time Control (MoSART) environment, a versatile tool for controls education and research that integrates analysis, design, and real-time visualization. By bridging the gap between terrestrial simulation and the unique challenges of spaceflight, Dr. Benavides is directly enabling safer, more autonomous robotic assistants for future orbital missions.
