About

Cong Sun’s research reshapes how we think about cable-driven parallel robots (CDPRs)—machines that use lightweight cables instead of rigid arms to achieve remarkable reach and dexterity. His core contributions lie in three interconnected areas: adaptive CDPR design, workspace optimization, and advanced control strategies. Sun pioneered the use of the cable wrapping phenomenon to create robots with unlimited rotational axes, a breakthrough that dramatically expands their practical workspace. His 2021 paper on planar adaptive CDPRs (36 citations) and the subsequent spatial design work (19 citations) established foundational design principles. For construction applications, his 2022 dual cable-suspended robot analysis (27 citations) provided optimal workspace solutions. Sun also developed a tension distribution algorithm (26 citations) that achieves high computational efficiency with robust optimization for redundant systems. More recently, he has integrated graph neural networks into CDPR kinematics through CafkNet (2024), addressing the notoriously complex forward kinematics problem. His work on wrench set robustness under hybrid joint-space control (2024) and adaptive event-triggered control for wheeled mobile robots (2025) demonstrates a growing interest in intelligent, constraint-aware control systems. With over 130 total citations, Sun’s research directly enables practical CDPR deployment in construction, manufacturing, and industrial robotics-as-a-service models.
