Yichen Zhai is redefining the future of robotics through the lens of digital fabrication and soft matter. His research centers on the desktop manufacturing of autonomous, electronics-free robots, pioneering a paradigm where complex machines are printed in a single, monolithic step. Zhai’s major contribution is the elimination of manual assembly and external electronics; his 2023 work on “Desktop fabrication of monolithic soft robotic devices” (131 citations) introduced fully 3D-printed, air-powered robots with embedded fluidic control circuits.
