Flexible and stretchable electronics refers to a class of electronic systems designed to bend, stretch, and conform to irregular or dynamic surfaces while maintaining reliable electrical functionality. Unlike rigid conventional electronics, these systems use novel materials—including carbon nanotubes, liquid metals, conductive hydrogels, and piezoelectric polymers—integrated into elastic substrates that can deform without losing performance. In robotics and AI, flexible electronics are central to developing electronic skin (e-skin): sensor arrays that mimic human skin's ability to detect pressure, temperature, strain, and other stimuli across large areas. These systems enable robots to interact safely with humans, give prosthetic limbs tactile feedback, and support health monitoring through wearable devices. Self-healing materials and energy-harvesting mechanisms like triboelectric nanogenerators further extend operational durability and autonomy. The significance of this technology lies in bridging the mechanical mismatch between soft biological systems and hard electronics, unlocking embodied sensing capabilities essential for next-generation robots operating in unstructured, human-centered environments.
