About
Roger E. Goldman is a pioneering roboticist whose research centers on the design and control of continuum robots for minimally invasive surgery, with a particular emphasis on single-port access surgery (SPAS) and intraocular procedures. His most significant contribution is the development of the Insertable Robotic Effectors Platform (IREP), a novel robotic system deployable through a 15 mm incision that integrates snake-like continuum arms, planar parallel mechanisms, and stereo vision to enable dexterous manipulation in confined surgical spaces. This work, detailed in papers with 198, 149, and 131 citations, addresses the fundamental challenge of providing surgical access and dexterity through a single small port. Goldman has also advanced the field by developing compliant motion control algorithms for continuum robots, using actuation force sensing to minimize tissue interaction forces—a critical safety feature for navigating tortuous anatomical pathways. His research extends to transurethral surveillance for bladder cancer and micro-surgical manipulators for orbital surgery, demonstrating broad impact across surgical specialties. With over 1,000 total citations, Goldman’s work has laid the foundation for next-generation surgical robots that enhance safety, precision, and access in complex procedures.
