Ram Ravichandran is a pioneering roboticist whose work has fundamentally shaped the fields of modular robotics and urban search and rescue (USAR). His research centers on creating highly adaptable, distributed robotic systems capable of operating in complex, unstructured environments. A key contribution is his foundational work on the Claytronics project, which envisions millions of programmable, self-reconfiguring modules—essentially "programmable matter"—that can dynamically morph into any shape or object.
