About

Malika Meghjani is a robotics researcher whose work spans multi-robot systems, autonomous exploration, and marine environmental monitoring. She has made significant contributions to the coordination of heterogeneous robot teams, rendezvous search algorithms, and more recently, multi-agent deep reinforcement learning for autonomous aerial systems. Meghjani's early and most influential work focused on deploying collaborative robot teams in challenging real-world environments. Her 2012 paper on multi-domain marine monitoring (134 citations) demonstrated a pioneering system integrating aerial, surface, and underwater robots to assist scientists in inspecting coral reefs and marine ecosystems — a landmark contribution to field robotics. Complementing this, her development of MARE, an autonomous airboat platform, provided a practical foundation for shallow-water exploration tasks. A consistent thread throughout her research is the rendezvous problem — how robots or agents can efficiently meet under uncertainty — explored across underwater environments, unknown graphs, and urban street networks. Her work on multi-target search strategies and coral reef visual mapping using Gaussian processes further highlights her strength in probabilistic and spatially-aware robotics. More recently, Meghjani has advanced into UAV swarm coordination, applying deep multi-agent reinforcement learning to pursuit-evasion scenarios (44 citations), demonstrating her ability to bridge classical robotics with modern machine learning approaches. Her body of work reflects a sustained commitment to robust, real-world autonomous systems.
