About
Lap Mou Tam is a leading robotics researcher whose work focuses on developing intelligent robotic systems for high-risk and precision tasks, particularly in building maintenance, biomedical applications, and disinfection. His major contributions include pioneering the design of versatile climbing robots—such as the quadruped climbing robot (QCR) with adhesive vacuum suckers, which, for the first time, integrates climbing, omnidirectional locomotion, obstacle-overcoming, and manipulation capabilities. He has also advanced window-cleaning robotics through biped and exoskeleton-structure designs, addressing safety challenges in high-altitude facade cleaning. In biomedical engineering, Tam developed a dexterous bilateral robotic microinjection system with haptic feedback, enabling precise microinjection of zebrafish larvae and embryos for the first time. His work on autonomous disinfection robots, leveraging aerosolized hydrogen peroxide, directly responded to the COVID-19 pandemic. With over 170 citations across his most-cited papers, Tam’s research has significant impact, notably in the IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics and IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters. His recent bio-inspired magnetic soft robots for gastrointestinal cancer intervention and deep Q-network-based path planning for window-cleaning robots further showcase his innovative, interdisciplinary approach to solving real-world problems.
