About

Hideki Kajima is a robotics researcher whose work spans bio-inspired locomotion control, personal mobility systems, and assistive robotics. He is perhaps best known for his foundational contributions to brachiation — the swinging, arm-over-arm locomotion style observed in primates — which he translated into sophisticated control strategies for robotic systems. Working extensively on the "Gorilla Robot II," a multi-locomotion platform capable of biped, quadruped, and brachiation movement, Kajima developed energy-based swing-back controllers and parameter adjustment methods that enabled smooth, continuous brachiation in real robotic hardware, work that has collectively attracted over 150 citations. His research demonstrated how kinetic and potential energy exchanges, analogous to pendulum dynamics, could be harnessed to produce stable, efficient robotic movement. Beyond bio-inspired locomotion, Kajima extended his expertise to personal mobility robots, introducing novel initial value compensation strategies for standing-up control in wheeled inverted pendulum devices. More recently, he contributed to the development of the Human Support Robot (HSR), a mobile manipulator designed to improve quality of life for aging populations.
