About

Daniel Burnier is a pioneering roboticist whose work spans swarm robotics, human-robot interaction, and biohybrid systems. His landmark 2013 paper on the Swarmanoid concept, with over 400 citations, introduced a groundbreaking framework for heterogeneous robotic swarms—decentralized collectives of specialized robots that cooperate without central control. This work fundamentally advanced the field by demonstrating how diverse robot types could self-organize to tackle complex tasks. Burnier also made major contributions to real-world deployment of interactive robots, leading the design of RoboX, a fleet of 11 autonomous tour-guide robots showcased at Expo.02. That project, documented in multiple highly-cited papers (over 200 citations combined), set new standards for long-term autonomy and secure human-robot interaction, and led to the spin-off company BlueBotics SA.
