About

Barbara Fletcher is a pioneering figure in deep-sea robotics, best known for her leadership in developing the Nereus hybrid underwater robotic vehicle—a revolutionary platform capable of operating at the full ocean depth of 11,000 meters. Her key research areas span autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and hybrid vehicle systems designed for extreme environments, as well as mine countermeasure (MCM) technologies. Fletcher’s most significant contribution is the Nereus vehicle, which transformed hadal science by enabling both survey and sampling operations in the deepest ocean trenches. Her 2008 overview paper on Nereus has garnered over 100 citations, while her 2009 field trial report—detailing successful dives to 10,903 meters in the Challenger Deep—has been cited more than 30 times. At SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific, she also advanced unmanned systems across land, sea, and air domains, authoring influential reviews on MCM vehicle capabilities and autonomous program applications.
