About

Suhada Jayasuriya is a robotics and control systems researcher whose work spans mobile robotics, robot manipulator control, and autonomous systems. He is perhaps best known for his foundational contributions to the kinematics and motion estimation of skid-steered mobile robots, a platform widely used in field and military applications. His 2009 paper on kinematic modeling of these robots, which has garnered nearly 200 citations, addressed the notoriously difficult problem of characterizing complex wheel-ground interactions, while his complementary 2007 work on IMU-based localization and slip estimation — approaching 100 citations — offered practical, low-cost solutions for real-world deployment. Early in his career, Jayasuriya made significant strides in robust tracking controllers for robotic manipulators, developing methods resilient to parameter uncertainty that predated and anticipated many modern robust control approaches. His later work broadened into cooperative agricultural robotics, differential drive vehicle control under input constraints, and distributed formation control for tracking oceanographic flow structures. Collectively, his research reflects a consistent commitment to bridging rigorous control theory with practical robotic platforms, making meaningful contributions across decades to both the theoretical foundations and applied challenges of autonomous systems.
