Naoki Tsunemoto is a pioneering researcher in the field of tele-existence and virtual reality, whose work has fundamentally shaped how humans interact with remote and virtual environments. His major contributions center on developing systems that allow operators to feel physically present in distant or simulated spaces, enabling dexterous manipulation even under challenging conditions. Tsunemoto’s most influential paper, “Experimental Study on Remote Manipulation Using Virtual Reality” (1993, 44 citations), demonstrated how virtual models constructed from real-world design data could overcome poor visibility in teleoperation, a breakthrough for hazardous or inaccessible environments. His foundational concept of “tele-existence,” introduced in a 1991 paper (14 citations), defined the technology as giving a human real-time sensation of being elsewhere, whether in a real or virtual world.
