About
Virtual reality (VR) is a computer-generated, immersive simulation technology that creates interactive three-dimensional environments users can perceive and engage with through specialized hardware such as headsets, motion controllers, and haptic feedback devices. In robotics and AI, VR serves multiple critical functions: it enables teleoperation of robots by providing operators with rich, realistic sensory feedback from remote environments; it generates high-quality training demonstrations for imitation learning and robot skill acquisition; and it supports the development and testing of control algorithms in safe, cost-effective simulated settings. VR is also widely applied in surgical robotics for both training and procedure execution, rehabilitation systems for stroke and motor impairment recovery, brain-computer interface research, and human-robot interaction design. Its importance stems from its ability to bridge physical and digital worlds—reducing training risks, lowering development costs, enabling remote presence, and accelerating the refinement of intelligent robotic systems before real-world deployment. As immersive platforms advance, VR increasingly underpins the next generation of human-robot collaboration.
