About
Marc Freese is a robotics researcher whose work spans two defining domains: robot simulation frameworks and humanitarian demining robotics. He is perhaps best known as a principal architect of V-REP (Virtual Robot Experimentation Platform), a versatile and scalable robot simulation environment introduced in 2010 and significantly expanded in 2013, which has accumulated over 1,400 citations and become a foundational tool for robotics researchers worldwide. Building on this legacy, Freese contributed to PyRep in 2019, extending V-REP's capabilities specifically for deep robot learning applications. Earlier in his career, Freese made meaningful contributions to life-saving robotics, working on systems designed to mechanize the dangerous process of humanitarian landmine detection and clearance. His contributions to the Gryphon demining robot series and related manipulator control techniques — including bias-tolerant terrain following and endpoint vibration control — addressed critical challenges of operating robotic systems in hazardous, unstructured field environments. His earliest work even ventured into planetary exploration with the LAMAlice nanorover prototype. Across more than two decades of research, Freese has consistently pursued robotics that is both technically rigorous and socially impactful, leaving a particularly lasting mark through simulation tools that continue to shape how the global robotics community designs and tests intelligent systems.
