David Barnes is a robotics researcher whose career spans four decades of pioneering work in industrial automation, multi-robot coordination, and planetary exploration systems. Beginning in the early 1980s, Barnes made foundational contributions to robotic error recovery, exploring how intelligent systems could detect and automatically correct faults during industrial operations — work that earned him 37 citations for his 1983 landmark paper on knowledge-based error recovery.
