About
Cheng Yee Low is a leading researcher in assistive robotics and biomedical engineering, whose work bridges the gap between human rehabilitation and intelligent machine design. His primary research areas include prosthetic hand development, tactile sensing, and rehabilitation robotics, with a particular focus on creating intuitive, user-friendly interfaces for individuals with limb differences. Low’s most impactful contribution is the development of a multifingered prosthetic hand controlled via a LabVIEW GUI and an Emotiv EEG headset, a pioneering brain-computer interface that has garnered 33 citations. He has also advanced the field through the design of hybrid-actuated finger prostheses with tactile sensing (20 citations) and the exploration of shape memory alloys as linear drives for robotic hand actuation (18 citations). Notably, his work on a single miniature tactile sensing element using pressure-sensitive conductive rubber (16 citations) has enabled more dexterous and responsive robotic hands. Low has also innovated in rehabilitation by gamifying a Nitinol-based ankle rehabilitation robot (14 citations), making therapy engaging for patients. With over 100 total citations across his most-cited works, Low’s research continues to shape the future of assistive technology and human-robot interaction.
