About
Braden Stenning is a roboticist whose work is reshaping how autonomous rovers navigate the most extreme and inaccessible environments on Earth—and beyond. His research centers on field robotics, planetary exploration, and autonomous navigation in GPS-denied terrains. Stenning’s most significant contribution is the development of the Network of Reusable Paths (NRP), a novel navigation framework that allows a mobile robot to autonomously seek distant goals while accurately returning to any previously visited point. This paradigm, which extends the concept of a Rapidly Exploring Random Tree into a physical, reusable network, is particularly well-suited for planetary rovers tasked with exploring unmapped, hazardous landscapes. His work has been validated through multiple analogue missions, including a deployment to the Sudbury impact structure in support of lunar sample return concepts. With a mission control architecture field-tested for robotic lunar sample return and a guidance, navigation, and control system tested for a ground-ice prospecting mission to Mars, Stenning’s research bridges the gap between terrestrial field trials and future planetary science missions.
