About
Nicholas R. Rypkema is a roboticist and engineer whose research focuses on autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), underwater navigation, and multi-robot coordination — areas where the harsh physics of the ocean environment present profound engineering challenges. His most influential work addresses the critical problem of localization for low-cost AUVs, which typically lack the expensive sensor suites of conventional systems. His 2018 paper on closed-loop single-beacon passive acoustic navigation (30 citations) demonstrated that accurate positioning could be achieved without traditional Doppler velocity logs or inertial navigation systems, dramatically lowering the barrier to entry for underwater autonomy.
