About

Y. Yanagihara is a robotics and human-robot interaction researcher whose work spans industrial automation, remote collaboration systems, and sensor-enhanced robotic guidance. Working at the intersection of robotics, computer vision, and human-computer interaction, Yanagihara has made meaningful contributions to how humans and robots can work together more effectively in complex, real-world environments. Among Yanagihara's most recognized contributions is the development of SCOPE (Sight Collaboration by Projection Effect), a remote-collaboration system integrating a mobile robot equipped with camera and projector capabilities to support on-site maintenance workers guided by remote experts — a pioneering concept that earned over 37 citations. This work laid the groundwork for what Yanagihara termed Robot-Augmented Communication (RAC) and Robot-Supported Cooperative Work (RSCW), frameworks designed to create shared fields of view between remote and on-site personnel. Yanagihara also developed the Multimodal Teaching Advisor (MTA), a system grounded in the concept of Task World Reality (TWR), which harmonizes operator intuition with sensor data to enhance robotic teaching in manufacturing settings. Additional contributions include high-speed visual sensing for robotic seam tracking and vision-based solutions for parts-picking in disordered environments, demonstrating consistent dedication to practical, sensor-driven industrial robotics throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
