About
Wouter Saeys is a leading researcher at the intersection of robotics, control systems, and agricultural automation. His work spans two primary domains: the innovative control of spherical rolling robots and the development of perception systems for agricultural robotics. In the field of spherical robotics, Saeys has made foundational contributions, including the decoupled dynamics modeling of spherical rolling robots (108 citations) and the development of an adaptive neuro-fuzzy control system using sliding-mode-control-theory-based online learning (160 citations). He has also pioneered velocity control methods using Grey-PID type fuzzy controllers with adaptive step sizes. In agricultural robotics, Saeys has been instrumental in advancing fruit detection and harvesting automation. His work on detecting red and bicolored apples using RGB-D cameras (147 citations) and developing task and motion planning algorithms for apple harvesting robots (58 citations) has significantly impacted the field. As a key contributor to the EU-funded CROPS project (Clever Robots for Crops), Saeys has helped develop robots for site-specific spraying and selective harvesting of high-value crops. His expertise in using ROS middleware for agricultural robotics has provided valuable design considerations for the research community.
