About
Woong Kwon is a leading roboticist whose work spans humanoid robotics, surgical systems, and multi-robot coordination. His most influential contribution is the development of Mahru III, a 150 cm, 62 kg biped humanoid robot created at Samsung Electronics, designed for wireless network connectivity and daily-life assistance—a foundational step toward personal service robots. Kwon has also made significant advances in medical robotics, modeling and controlling a snake-like single-port access surgical robot with multiple degrees of freedom, enabling minimally invasive procedures. His research on particle filter-based heading estimation using magnetic compasses has improved mobile robot navigation robustness.
