About

Wenzhuo Zhi is a rising researcher at the intersection of rehabilitation robotics and soft robotic systems, with a focus on developing intelligent assistive technologies for patients with motor and respiratory impairments. Their work centers on two key areas: reconfigurable lower-limb exoskeletons for gait rehabilitation and soft robotic systems for respiratory assistance. In their pioneering 2024 pilot study, Zhi designed and assessed a behavioral assistive robot that adapts to individual patient needs, enabling safer and more natural standing and walking recovery for individuals with functional motor disorders—a contribution that has already garnered early citations for its clinical promise. More recently, in 2025, Zhi introduced a thoraco-abdominal biomechanical model paired with a dual-layer control method for a soft robotic system targeting respiratory dysfunction. This work addresses a critical gap in human-robot synchronization and patient safety by precisely managing interaction forces, offering a novel solution for patients transitioning from intensive care. With their innovative integration of biomechanics, control theory, and soft robotics, Zhi is establishing a strong foundation for next-generation, patient-centered rehabilitation devices.
