About
Sjoerd Tijmons is a pioneering roboticist whose work sits at the intersection of bio-inspired flight and autonomous navigation. His primary research focuses on Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicles (FWMAVs)—ultra-lightweight robots that mimic insect and bird flight—and the application of Behavior Trees in Evolutionary Robotics. Tijmons made a landmark contribution in 2014 by demonstrating the first-ever FWMAV capable of autonomous flight using only onboard processing, a 20-gram platform equipped with a 4-gram stereo vision system. This breakthrough, detailed in his most-cited paper (119 citations), solved the immense challenge of stabilizing and navigating a flapping-wing robot in generic environments. He further advanced the field by enabling autonomous door and corridor traversal (2018, 9 citations) and obstacle avoidance (2013, 12 citations), proving that even the lightest aerial robots can perceive and react to their surroundings without external infrastructure. Beyond flight, Tijmons pioneered the use of Behavior Trees in Evolutionary Robotics (2016, 50 citations), introducing a modular, scalable framework for evolving complex behaviors on real robots with limited sensors. His work has directly influenced the design of autonomous micro-drones for search-and-rescue, environmental monitoring, and exploration in cluttered, GPS-denied spaces.
