About
Seung-Yeon Jang is pioneering the frontier of soft robotics, with a focus on creating intelligent, flexible systems that bridge the gap between machines and human physiology. Their research centers on three key areas: soft wearable robots for rehabilitation, shape-morphing tactile displays, and highly stretchable sensors for continuum manipulators. Jang’s most notable contribution is the development of a soft wearable robot that uses shape memory alloy (SMA)-based artificial muscles to assist with complex upper limb motions like elbow flexion and forearm supination/pronation. This work, published in 2022 and cited 41 times, introduces an active cooling system for the SMA bundles, enabling safer and more responsive assistance. In 2024, Jang advanced the field of human-machine interaction with a dynamically reconfigurable shape-morphing display that uses hydraulically coupled PVC gel actuators to create seamless, multimodal tactile sensations—a paper already garnering 31 citations. Additionally, Jang’s 2021 work on a highly stretchable-compressible coiled polymer sensor (15 citations) provides critical proprioception for soft continuum robots, enabling precise shape control. These contributions position Jang as a rising leader in soft robotics, with a clear trajectory toward more intuitive and adaptive robotic systems.
