About
Sadaf Sobhani is a pioneering roboticist whose work bridges soft robotics, microactuation, and haptic interfaces. Her primary research focuses on developing high-energy-density, soft actuators for insect-scale robots and tactile displays, addressing fundamental scaling challenges in robotics. Sobhani’s most notable contribution is the creation of powerful, soft combustion actuators that enable insect-scale robots to achieve unprecedented feats of strength and endurance—a breakthrough detailed in her highly cited 2023 paper (110 citations). This work overcomes the limitations of traditional microactuators, which are often constrained by low-energy-density power sources and produce insufficient force. More recently, Sobhani has advanced haptic technology with her 2025 paper on explosion-powered eversible tactile displays, which aims to deliver high-resolution, individually addressable tactile feedback for applications in virtual reality, remote machine operation, and accessibility for blind or visually impaired users. Her innovative use of combustion-based actuation in soft robotics has positioned her as a leading figure in the field, with her research promising to transform both micro-robotics and human-machine interaction.
