About

Nan Tian is a robotics researcher whose work sits at the dynamic intersection of cloud robotics, fog computing, and human-robot interaction. His research addresses one of the most pressing challenges in modern robotics: enabling robots to harness powerful remote computation while overcoming the real-world constraints of network latency, variability, and reliability. Tian has been instrumental in developing frameworks that bridge cloud infrastructure and robotic systems, most notably through his contributions to the FogROS2 ecosystem — a suite of tools enabling latency-sensitive, fault-tolerant, and probabilistically reliable cloud robotics for ROS2 applications. His earlier work on the Berkeley Robotics and Automation as a Service (BRASS) platform and fog-based visual servoing systems (46 citations) laid important groundwork for scalable, service-oriented robotics architectures. Beyond infrastructure, Tian has explored human-robot interaction through cloud-based semaphore mirroring and teleoperation with motion synthesis.
