About
Minh-Chinh Nguyen is a pioneering researcher in calibration-free vision-guided robotics, whose work has fundamentally advanced how robots perceive and interact with their environment. His core research areas span stereo vision-based robot control, object recognition, and autonomous skill acquisition. Nguyen's most significant contribution is the development of a methodology that enables robot manipulators to transition directly from image coordinates to motion control commands, eliminating the need for traditional calibration of both the robot and its vision system. His seminal 1996 paper on calibration-free stereo vision (14 citations) introduced this paradigm-shifting approach, allowing robots to handle objects of varying shapes without quantitative modeling. Nguyen further extended this work to create self-learning robots that can search for and grasp objects anywhere in their workspace, even when initially invisible to cameras. His 2002 papers on learning vision-guided robots (9 and 8 citations) demonstrated how robots could continuously improve performance through experience, gathering knowledge during normal operation and adapting to changing conditions.
