About

Jianliang Xiao is a leading innovator in stretchable, self-healing, and recyclable electronics, with a focus on wearable human-machine interfaces (HMIs) and biomedical devices. His pioneering work introduced the first dynamic covalent thermoset-based electronic skin (e-skin), enabling devices that are not only stretchable but also fully recyclable and malleable—a breakthrough that has garnered over 500 citations. Xiao’s research spans from waterproof AlInGaP optoelectronics on stretchable substrates (639 citations) to metal oxide semiconductor nanomembrane-based soft electronics for unobtrusive HMIs (300 citations). He has also advanced skin-preparation-free microneedle adhesive patches for reliable electrophysiological sensing and exoskeleton control, and developed rubbery semiconducting nanofilms for fully rubbery integrated electronics. His work on heterogeneous integration of rigid, soft, and liquid materials has led to self-healable, reconfigurable wearable systems (199 citations). More recently, Xiao has explored deep-learning-assisted liquid metal sensors for boxing training and biomimetic prosthetic hands using liquid crystal elastomer tendons. His contributions are reshaping soft electronics for healthcare, robotics, and harsh-environment applications, with over 1,900 total citations across his top ten papers.
